Amphibian of the Year 2015: Danube crested newt

2014-12-14

The Danube crested newt (Triturus dobrogicus) was selected by the Amhpibian and Reptile Conservation Group of MME BirdLife Hungary as the \"Amphibian of the Year\" in 2015. This protected species, selection criteria for Natura2000, is a relatively frequent inhabitant of lowland water bodies in Hungary. As Hungarian distribution area makes approximately 40% of its European range, we have an international responsibility in its conservation.
We expect our surveyors to supply additional observations about the species in 2015 by uploading it to the website of National Mapping Program of Amphibians and Reptiles. As in previous years we will announce related programs (field-trips, presentations, drawing contest), which will appear on our  Facebook-page as well.
